Mapping – Invasive Plant Reporting & Prevention Project

This initiative — the Wisconsin Invasive Plant Reporting & Prevention Project — is a joint effort of the State Herbarium at UW-Madison and the Wisconsin DNR and is funded by a grant from the EPA’s Great Lakes National Program Office.

Currently the project focuses on a list of thirty target species. For each species, the aim is to locate, report, and eradicate any populations in Wisconsin.

The goal of this project is to prevent early detection invasive plant species from becoming established in Wisconsin. Early detection invasive species are those species that are only present in Wisconsin in small numbers or are not yet present in the state. These species have proven to be a problem in other states.

Our hope is that you will join this statewide effort to find and eradicate these plants. Reporting your findings will help us in developing a database of plant locations and allow others to use the UW Madison Herbarium website and the NIISS.org website to track new occurrences of these plants. Reporting occurrences of these plants will also help with monitoring to make sure populations of these new invasive plants are contained or destroyed.

In addition to reporting populations of these plants, we encourage you to coordinate or assist in taking actions to control these plants where they are found. At this point we do not have funding to assist in eradication, but we are seeking additional funds. We are also hoping to get a large number of Wisconsin residents to register their interest in helping, so when a population of a target species is found in their part of the state, we can call on interested residents to help collect voucher specimens, assist with control efforts or monitor for new occurrences.

The following files contain information about the program, descriptions of target plants, reporting procedures, voucher-making instructions, and an Invasive Plant Report form.
