MINUTES OF MEETING

Invasive Plants Association of Wisconsin/Education Committee

April 12, 2005, 9:00 a.m., The Nature Conservancy, Madison

Present:  Amy Staffen, Rolf Utegaard*, Darcy Kind, Jerry Doll*, Tom Boos, Gail Epping-Overholt, Brock Woods*, Mary Ann Buenzow* (*conference call)

I.  Review Agenda

II.  Old Business

A.  Speaker’s Bureau Update.

Has been a great success thus far with about 30 speakers.  At least five speakers have been contacted through this resource.

B.  Power Point Presentation Update.

Tom, with the help of Kelly Kearn’s work study, is cleaning up the list to make the titles and descriptions more meaningful.  We also acknowledged the need for scripts.  Anyone who uses a PP presentation is encouraged to submit their script to Tom to share with others as a reference; they don’t have to be perfect.  Tom and others are also working on having a CD image library that can be distributed to presenters for insertion into custom-made PP presentations.

ACTION ITEM:  Amy suggests creating a basic introductory statement on Invasive Species and IPAW that could be a starting point for any presentation.

C.  Resource List.  Darcy had this completed last December, and it is posted on the IPAW and MIPN websites.  Kate Howe with MIPN is now revising it to offer clearer descriptions of resources and to identify target audiences.  Website URLs have been taken out, unless they reference specific tangible resources.

ACTION ITEM:  Further ‘advertise’ the above three resources.  Amy will take her “Resources for Invasive Species Presentations” email and make it into a flier that can be posted on displays and the website.  Gail will help by distributing to middle school, high school and college educators.  Rolf will incorporate into IPAW display.  Amy will send to Ken Genskow for distribution to Basin Educators, and to remaining ISAM partner list.

D.  IPAW Conference.

Little discussion on this topic, as Kelly was absent and we hadn’t heard back from Wisconsin Wetlands (whose conference we were hoping to ‘piggyback.’

E.  Invasive Species Awareness Month

See attached “Wish List” with notes.

II.  New Business

A.  Website Subcommittee.

At the January IPAW Board meeting, it was decided that a Website Subcommittee could be formed as a branch of the Education Committee.  Interested parties include:  Amy Staffen, Kelly Kearns, Tom Boos, Tom Brock, Marsha Vomastic.  Meeting needs to be set.

ACTION ITEM:  Amy needs to set meeting for Subcommittee.  She will put out a notice to the IPAW Listserv to solicit other interested individuals, as well as check with Angie to see if anyone indicated interest on their membership cards.

ACTION ITEM:  Rolf requests that we add to the website a list of IPAW display materials and contact information for those who store these.

Meeting adjourned at 10:30 a.m.

INVASIVE SPECIES AWARENESS MONTH 2005 WISH LIST

Consider these all ACTION ITEMS!!!

I.  Work with groups to set up events!

A.  Choose one group to communicate with:  Do they know about ISAM?  Direct them to me and/or the website for more information.  Offer encouragement and general advice.  Amy is working with Wild Ones chapters (invasive/native plant exchange or a native species alternatives to invasives list) and Campus Natural Areas (Madison).  Amy will send you all spreadsheet with list of potential partners.  Dave and Gail will communicate with a local scout troops.  Let her know which group you choose to work with!

B.  Choose one event to piggyback on (see below).  Set up display or???

C.  Take press-ready articles from website and have them printed in your neighborhood or work newsletter.  Mary Ann will submit one to Rock County publication.

II.  Publicize!!

A.  In Wisconsin (Patty Loew).  Contact to get film footage for next year?  Patty is on ALNC’s Board as well as TNC’s.  Let Amy know if you have any neat invasive events going on in June that we should invite them to.  Ideas from meeting:  Dan Bohlin’s field day in Grant County, Crestwood garlic mustard pulling, Scott Johnson’s ‘tug-a-suckle,’ ALNC June event.

B.  Print out fliers/postcards from website and post on displays, in your neighborhoods, etc.  Tom will ask IPAW Board if they can provide some money to print some for those who can’t afford to do so themselves.

C.  Create links to ISAM website on other websites     (http://invasivespecies.wi.gov/awareness)

D.  Door hangers that can be distributed during ISAM.  They will have general info on IPAW, ISAM and where to find info.  They will also have a slot where Wild Cards can be inserted if someone has a specific invasive on their property.  Rolf will do a mock-up for the Committee.  Tom recommends that we use money from WE-Energies for this.

E.  Darcy mentioned working with WMMM-FM in Madison, since they have a Green Team.  Suggested that we have Ken Lonquist’s invasive species song recorded and distribute it to radio stations around the state in June along with information on ISAM.  Gail will contact Ken to discuss.

III.  Website

A.  Help with Educational Materials section.  Need to add items from Darcy’s list.  Right now it just has resources from DNR and Sea Grant.  Very difficult to navigate as it’s in the form of one continuous text file.  Would like to have it a searchable database similar to Darcy’s list.  Talk to Marsha Vomastic and Drew Feldkirchner for advice.

B.  Image Library.  Please send Amy your images showing people doing invasives control work!!  She only has FIVE so far.

C.  Useful Links.  Also a cumbersome resource.  Get Marsha V.’s and Drew F.’s advice for this too.

D.  Beyond Awareness.  Need single-page descriptions…

o       Volunteer for Local Groups (MIPN, IPAW, etc.) – Rolf will do.

o       Beware of What You Plant -- Tom and Darcy will work on this.

IV.  Media Kit Fact Sheets.  Let me know if I should add others.

JUNE EVENTS WHERE ISAM COULD PARTICIPATE
